A free 6-week beginning vegetable gardening course enabling gardeners to grow a portion of their food

2023 – Program Overview

  • Covers basics of low-cost vegetable gardening
  • 9-hour course divided into 6 weekly class sessions.
    • 3 classes are hybrid- in person and zoom (Weeks 1,3 and 5). In-person classes will be held at the Yamhill County Extension Office- McMinnville  on Saturday, February 25,  March 11 and April 1 at 10 AM
    • 3 classes are demonstration/hands on (Weeks 2,4 and 6). Demonstration/hands on classes will be held at sites to be determined in Newberg, McMinnville and Sheridan/Willamina March 4, March 18 and April 8 at 10:00 AM.
  • There will be one or two summer meetings and 1 fall meeting (to be scheduled}.
  • Open to adults and teenagers
  • Taught by trained volunteer Master Gardener Educators
  • A course booklet will be provided
  • Master Gardener mentors will provide additional support for class attendees during the classes and throughout the gardening season.
  • Priority for lower income participants.

Course Topics

  • Garden site planning, soils, compost & fertilizer, planting, watering and garden care, weeds and bugs, harvesting and storing vegetables.

Raised Beds/Containers

Upon class completion, self-declared lower income participants qualify for a raised bed or containers with soil for the home garden or a Community Garden bed (if available), seeds, plant starts and limited tools.  All other participants may purchase raised beds or containers at cost.

the class begins when we will open remaining seats to all registrants.
